Sailor Mail
Email support for the "Rest of the Navy"
updated 9/9/2003

Every component of the Sailormail system can also be downloaded from the SIPRNET at http://sailormail.csl.navy.smil.mil

Sailor Mail (afloat) (Version 4.6.4 - approx 4.5 Meg)

For Niprnet Email            For Siprnet Email

These components are  used onboard afloat units to dramatically simplify the process of handling email. The Siprnet component is used only onboard Tridents, providing the ability to process Siprnet email. Both components provide the ability to search for sensitive words in either the outgoing or the incoming email files.

Although (currently) not mandatory, these components make use of an onboard web page for drafting the outbound email. Here's how this feature works.....

The LAN administrator installs a pre-built web page on the onboard web server. After running the setup program (which configures the system), the result  is a web page (using active server pages), allowing afloat users to create email with an interface very similar to what's commonly seen when using other web based email systems - such as hotmail or yahoo mail.

Alternately, the webmaster can create a form with text boxes - allowing the sailor to enter his shipboard email address, and four destination addresses (one "TO", and three "CC" lines) , a subject line, and the body of the message.  When the web user clicks "submit", the form contents are sent to an onboard account.

The software downloaded using the link above then retrieves the mail from that account, converts the files into the "sailor mail format", then provides onboard administrators with the ability to search for sensitive words prior to forwarding ashore via any of the paths mentioned above.

You can click here, for a preview of what the simplified web page would look like. Although not shown here, the version using Active Server Pages is MUCH superior to the "stripped down webmail version.

ETRN - (for all subs with IP connectivity afloat) Version 3.0 - approx 2.2 Meg)
This component is used to force the mail server ashore (niprnet and siprnet) to process the queue for all email destined to your particular domain.  The only difference between earlier versions and version 3 is that in version 3, its no longer necessary to have a static IP address for the workstation running the ETRN software.  DHCP can be enabled on the laptop, eliminating some of the other errors otherwise seen - such as incorrect gateway, subnet mask, WINS, or DNS configuration.  All of that data is now populated into the workstation directly from the local DHCP server.

Residing Ashore and Afloat - on the BGIXS system (Version 5.2.1  - 1.7 Meg)

This component is used on the BGIXS system, both ashore and afloat.  It greatly simplifying the process of inserting files into BGIXS as well as extracting files from the BGIXS system.

Sailor Mail Ashore  (Version 4.6.4  - 2.6 Meg)

For Niprnet Email       For SIPRNET Email

This component is used on the unclassified system ashore, connected to the Internet / Siprnet respectively. It's purpose is to  receive email from the Niprnet or Siprnet, and push it to the sub.

In addition to the components listed above, there are other components not listed here - specifically those used at COMSUBLANT - and several other "utilities" sometimes helpful when installing the afloat component. Contact the developer for additional details on these components.

Drivers for the CF-48  (Version 4.6.4  - 2.6 Meg)

The CF-48 laptop comes in two different versions. Without going into details of the differences, the bottom line is it's often difficult to find drivers for these laptops.  Clicking here will download a 47 Megabyte file containing everything I've found available. There are no guarantees they're what you're looking for - but at least they're something you can try.
